Sex Toys: Vibrators and Dildos

Vibrators and dildos are sex toys that can be used for masturbation and/or sex. All different people use vibrators and dildos in a variety of ways–either alone, with a partner or a group of people.

Vibrators vibrate (surprise!) to increase stimulation to a desired body part, be it the clitoris, vagina, anus or any other erogenous body parts. They are either battery operated or electric and they are either phallic-shaped (for internal or external use) or shaped like a back massager (for external use).

A dildo, on the other hand, is completely controlled by the speed and tempo of the person using it. They, too, are generally phallic-shaped. Dildos can be used by hand or by strapping it on to a body with a dildo harness and “wearing” the dildo in order to have sex with penetration.

Although you may have seen vibrators and dildos in exciting neon or see-through colors, they actually have far less flashy roots. Victorian-era doctors, tired of massaging females’ genitals in attempts at curing “hysteria,” created the mechanical answer: a “portable vibrator,” which was first advertised in a Sears catalog from 1918.

Dildos date even further back, but they were called olisbos by the ancient Greeks who fashioned them out of wood, leather and stone. 15th century Italians dubbed the toy diletto (translation: delight).

There are no tried and true statistics for how many people use vibrators or dildos, but a popular sex shop in New York City called “Toys In Babeland” says that 41% of its total sales are attributed to vibrators.

Vibrators and dildos are not as taboo as they once were–in fact, they have almost become “fashionable.” Today, designers create high-priced dildos out of Swarovski and quartz crystals, fur and molten glass. Popular television shows also refer to these sex toys. “Sex and the City” fans might remember the famous episode when Charlotte discovers a whole new window of sexual pleasure after buying a vibrator.

If a person is old enough to purchase a vibrator and dildo, doing so through a reputable sex shop will give her the chance to talk to salespeople who are knowledgeable, personable, and willing to answer questions about different brands, materials or anything else pertaining to vibrators and dildos.

Sex experts recommend keeping those vibrators or dildos clean. It’s important to:

Put a condom on the dildo or vibrator if it will be inserted into a person’s anus. Equally important is remembering to switch condoms each time the usage is switched from anus to vagina.

Know what kind of material the vibrator or dildo is made of, because different materials often require different types of cleaning. Silicone, however, is a very popular toy material, and it can be washed with soap and warm water. Allow it to air dry.

If it is an electric toy, do not submerge it in water. Instead, clean it with a soapy, damp washcloth.
